Ever wonder what it takes to make it as a designer today? According to Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte, an obsession with horror films might help.
The California born sisters, who are profiled in the upcoming PBS documentary "Makers: Women Who Make America," spent their first year after college watching about eight horror films a day. They eventually started to design their own collection, moved to New York City (with only 10 garments to show) and hoped that they were good enough. And good enough they were.
With a spread in Women's Wear Daily launching their careers, their diaphanous designs can now be seen in the pages of Vogue and on the big screen -- the duo was responsible for the gorgeous costumes in "Black Swan."
The best piece of advice, according to Kate Mulleavy is to "follow your own path. I really believe in that. It's not the path that other people take, because the people that follow their own are going to be the ones that lead us into the future." And with two CFDA awards under her belt, her advice is worth heeding.
