We were tempted to say that the two trends on the up are: Jennifer Lawrence. And Jennifer Lawrence. But we recognize we may need to reel in our obsession with the Best Actress winner just a tad, so we found two other Oscars trends worth taking note of. We also identified a beauty look that seems to be on the way out, based on how little we saw of it on the Academy Awards red carpet.
Up: Pale Pastels: Pastels, are by definition, pale, but the ones we saw at the Oscars were even lighter than typical pastels. We lost count of how many ladies wore so-light-it’s-almost-white gowns, but here are some of the ones we do remember: Jennifer Lawrence (ever heard of her?) stunned in a blush Dior gown, Anne Hathaway chose a baby pink Prada dress, Amy Adams slipped into pale blue Oscar de la Renta and Amanda Seyfried donned a lavender Alexander McQueen creation.
Down: Red Lips: The odds of spotting a cherry pout on a red carpet are usually about as high as seeing a black dress on the red carpet, but this year Jessica Chastain was one of the only stars to wear a red lip. Instead, the most popular lip colors of the night were similar to the go-to shades for gowns: light pinks and nudes.
Up: Matchy-Matchy Looks: At past awards shows, attendees went with accessories in shades that complemented their gowns, perhaps choosing a clutch in the same hue as the dress’s detailing or wearing a shoe in a shade from the same color family, only darker. But Jennifer Garner, Kerry Washington, Melissa McCarthy and Jennifer Aniston all surprised us by sticking with one color from head to toe.
