Miranda Lambert debuted bold pink tips at the CMA Awards in Nashville Wednesday night, and because we’re still talking about her crazy-cool pastel do, we reached out to her mane man, celebrity hair stylist Johnny Lavoy, for the exclusive details on her show-stopping hairstyle.

Lavoy, who’s been working with Lambert almost four years, says the inspiration behind the color change came from her pink moment during a surprise guest appearance at Taylor Swift‘s concert.
“I noticed her Nashville colorist, Lee Wright, had added a few pastel pink streaks in her hair, so I wanted to do something fun and different this year for the CMA Awards,” he tells PeopleStyle exclusively. “We talked about adding to what she already had and going for a pink ombré [look], and the idea went into motion.”
But, he adds, the pop of pink in Lambert’s hair shouldn’t be too much of a surprise, considering how much she loves the hue.
“It’s no secret that Miranda’s favorite color is pink,” Lavoy shares. “She owns a store named the Pink Pistol and just came of her all-women tour, called Roadside Bars & Pink Guitars.”
So how did Lavoy get Lambert’s color ready for the red carpet? Colored clip-in extensions!
“Because of the risk involved, I thought the smartest plan would be making some clip-in extensions and try out the color and see if she liked it,” he explains.
The hair pro used Lox Extensions in a light blonde and added the pink color with an ombré effect using Joico Semi-Permament Hair Color in Soft Pink. He then cut the freshly dyed extensions to match Lambert’s “lob” length and clipped them in.

Once the pink extensions were added, Lavoy flat-ironed Lambert’s hair with a PRO Beauty Tools 1-inch Professional Ceramic Shine Digital Straightener to create a sleek, straight style to “complement her sexy, sleek black Versace dress,” he says.
And then the hair pro added a bit of depth to the style with a few loose “deconstructed rock ‘n’ roll waves” using the Pro Beauty 1-inch Professional Gold Curling Iron and the Pro Beauty 1 1/4-inch Professional Gold Curling Iron since the singer loves to “rock out” during her performances.
The final result? A look Lavoy describes as “soft, edgy and chic.”
“This was the first time Miranda played with a bold color,” Lavoy says. “And she loved it so [much] that I don’t think it will be the last.” We totally agree.
