Sam Smith is not one for taking a backseat when it comes to dressing up for the red carpet. The "Unholy" singer arrived for the 2023 Brits wearing a structured latex jumpsuit, by the designer Harri, that seemed to inflate at the shoulders and thighs. They added platform boots to finish the quirky, structural look and wowed as they posed for photographs. Some even noticed that the inflated legs formed a heart shape - how very apt for Valentine's week.
The same night, Smith performed their hit single alongside Kim Petras. Planning ahead, they made an outfit change for the stage - we were wondering how they would dance in the massive ensemble (and sit down, for that matter!). They joined Harry Styles, Lewis Capaldi, Cat Burns, Lizzo, Wet Leg, and Stormzy among the night's entertainment.
Smith has been wowing in an array of show-stopping outfits lately. Fresh from their devilish performance at the 2023 Grammys wearing red horns, Smith continues to shake up red carpet style thanks to a newfound confidence they have felt since turning 30, most notably with their style and relationship with their body.
"Within my industry there is definitely that question of, 'What should a pop star look like?" they told The Sunday Times. "When I was 25 I came off tour exhausted. I looked to role models in the body world. Every time I went to the pool I felt self-conscious, but I forced myself to take my top off. It paid off because I now have the opposite of body dysmorphia. I look fabulous. I'm finally getting a tan. I'm burnt in places I've never been burnt."
Since coming out as non-binary in 2019 and announcing their change of pronouns, the singer finally feels comfortable in their skin. They were subject to cruel comments online after wearing a silver sequin Valentino jumpsuit to Capital's Jingle Bell Ball in December, but their journey of self-love means leaving all negativity firmly off their radar, where it belongs.
