Lizzo's Cutout Dress at the People's Choice Awards Took 6 Weeks to Make

Lizzo's moment at the 2022 People's Choice Awards, where she accepted the honor of "champion," called for a very special look. The 34-year-old musician and her stylist Brett Alan Nelson tapped Alexander McQueen to construct a midnight blue satin dress and matching thigh-high sock boots stitched with colorful flowers, birds, and other creatures. The coordinates took six weeks to make, according to
E!'s red carpet newscasters, and came in a multi-layered, off-the-shoulder silhouette with fabric panels peeling away into a free-flowing skirt at the waist - all to reveal a caged cutout.

Hammered gold jewelry played up the metallic shimmer of the threadwork, including rings by Pamela Love and blown-up chainlink earrings and a necklace from Alexis Bittar. Spindly cuffs wrapped around Lizzo's wrists, drawing attention to her manicure, courtesy of Eri Ishizu, which met white, foil-decorated polish with apple-red French tips. Metal hairpieces from Alexis Bittar were also woven into the star's edgy fauxhawk, fashioned by Shelby Swain. Alexx Mayo completed the glam with colorful makeup, incorporating shades of peach, gold, and mahogany.

Lizzo's outfit seemingly pulled together the looks worn by the 17 diverse activists that she honored onstage, symbolizing their unity in empowering and supporting others. At the same time, it speaks to her personal style, which is bright and fun, but not without attention to detail. Though she didn't walk the red carpet alongside her peers, her ensemble ended up making a statement where it was most necessary at an event like the People's Choice Awards: in front of her fans.
