If the definition of punk is standing up against the establishment and being counter-culture, then perhaps the seersucker Tommy Hilfiger gown Zooey Deschanel wore to Monday night’s Met Ball did in fact fit the theme of the evening.
We chatted with Hilfiger about the unexpected choice and he says, “The dress was an original, quirky and fun take on the punk theme.” He tells PEOPLE the creation is a “special design for Zooey,” who — by the way — we hardly recognized when she first hit the red carpet. (Blame it on the fact that her until-now omnipresent blunt bangs were swept to the side.)
“She wanted to be really involved,” Hilfiger adds of the process behind creating the summery blue-and-white gown. “It was a lot of fun to collaborate with her on the design. We were inspired by the seersucker looks from our Spring 2013 collection.”
We never thought we’d see seersucker at an event focused around the words chaos and punk, but Hilfiger swears, “[It's] a perfect match for Zooey’s sense of style.”
And we will give Deschaney one thing: That hot-pink safety pin Edie Parker clutch is certainly a nod, albeit a cutesy one, to the night’s theme.
