When we woke up to headlines about a princess embroiled in a major court case, we thought: Who is this royal rebel? After a little digging, we learned that it was Princess Cristina of Spain grabbing headlines for her involvement in a major corruption case -- yikes!
The 47-year-old princess' husband, Inaki Urdangarin, is the lead suspect in an investigation alleging that Urdangarin helped funnel millions of euros worth of public funds into two of his private companies. Since Cristina is a board member for both businesses, she received a court summons today to testify later this month, a first for a member of the king's immediate family. (She's the daughter of King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofía of Spain.)
So since we, self-proclaimed royal enthusiasts, didn't know much about the rabble-rousing royal, we've rounded up five things you should know about Princess Cristina:
1. She's seventh in the line to the Spanish throne.
2. Her husband, Inaki Urdangarin, is a team handball player for Spain.
3. After getting married in 1997, she received the title Duchess of Palma de Mallorca from her father.
4. She's the Honorary President of the Spanish Committee of UNESCO and Goodwill Ambassador to the United Nations for the 2nd World Assembly on Ageing.
5. She's an Olympian! She competed on the Spanish Olympic sailing team in 1988.
Feel better now that you know a little more about the princess? Stay tuned for more details as the case unfolds.
