Who Missed the Memo: The Stars Who Punked Out of the Met Gala Theme

The anticipation leading up to this year’s Met Ball was especially high thanks to the theme of the evening: punk. We envisioned plaids, spikes, sculpted skyhigh hair and nose rings. And for the most part, stars delivered. (Had there been metal detectors at the entrance, the majority of guests wouldn’t have made it through.) But four celebs didn’t deliver: Heidi Klum, Kate Upton, Gwyneth Paltrow and Renée Zellweger seemed to have glossed over the part of the invitation that specified the dress code.

Klum hit the carpet looking like a very sexy mother of the bride in a silvery gown with a sculpted, embellished bodice (and not even a little bit of a nod to punk with her makeup, which she kept minimal and fresh).

Upton had us wondering if she got lost on the way to a fancy beach party in her off-theme (albiet gorgeous) Diane von Furstenberg tank maxi in the decidedly un-punk shade of Kelly green.

And while we acknowledge that showing up to one of the biggest nights in fashion with visible tan lines is certainly anti-establishment, Paltrow’s bright-pink Valentino Haute Couture design missed the mark. (Anna Wintour may have us convinced that “pink is punk,” but when the silhouette looks like this, the first word that comes to mind isn’t rebellious.)

And what can we say about Zellwegger? Either the woman is gravely allergic to spikes or she simply doesn’t prescribe to dress codes. Why else would she have selected a knee-length, long-sleeve LBD with beading and coordinating pumps, plus twee bangs?

Do you like any of these stars’ looks (even if they didn’t follow the dress code)?
