We Tried It: A Silicone Toothbrush

Who Tried it: Christina Baez, Photo Editor

What is it: The Foreo Issa, a super weird-looking electric toothbrush made only of silicone

Why I did it: Who wouldn’t want a million dollar smile? Or, in this case, a $200 one? I’ll admit that’s pretty pricey for a toothbrush, but I had to try it out to see if it lived up to the hype

Level of difficulty: 0

Most people that know me would probably describe me as a germaphobe. I like to think of myself as germ-aware. I attended a beauty insider event at Sephora when I was introduced to the Issa toothbrush, and when first thing the sales associate told me was “the silicone resists bacteria buildup,” I was sold. I didn’t need to hear about its brush head having to be replaced only once a year or its battery life lasting six months in between charges. I just couldn’t wait to get home and toss out what I imagined to be my squalid toothbrush and replace it with the posh (nice way of saying “expensive”), germ-free Issa.

It’s extremely easy to use. Its silicone bristles efficiently scrub away at your teeth without scratching at them in a way that a standard plastic bristle might. The brush has eight different pulsations to suit your brushing needs, and the silicone bristles allow for gum massages to be gentle, which is a huge plus for those with sensitive gums like me. As you brush (using whichever toothpaste you’d like), the Issa alerts you every 30 seconds with pulsations to switch to another quadrant of your mouth and at the end of the two minute brushing cycle you will be alerted with three pauses. It’s basically impossible to be a tooth-brushing slacker.

Verdict: If you’re in the market for a fancy toothbrush (and this thing comes with an authenticity card, travel pouch, USB charger and a manual — it doesn’t get any fancier than that), then treat yourself and buy this brush. Yes, it’s expensive, but so is dental work! Not only do you change the brush head once a year (brush heads are $25), as opposed to the every three months recommended by dentists for ordinary toothbrushes, it comes with a ten year warranty. My only recommendation is to floss regularly, which you should be doing regardless.
