As Mark Gilberg—a trooper with the Arizona Department of Safety—prepared to wrap up his last day on the job before embarking on his retirement, he gave an emotional call that reflected on his long career that began almost four decades ago.
In footage from PEOPLE’s video series, The Upbeat, in association with Citi, Gilberg is seen sitting in his patrol car and making his last “10-7,” referencing the code trooper’s use when they’re ending their shift.
“Badge 2988 began his career March 11, 1981… this will be my final 10-7,” Gilberg said. “I just wanted to thank everybody for everything that they’ve ever done. It’s been an honor and a privilege, and a great career; it’s been a great adventure. Thank everybody that’s ever helped me.”
A dispatcher on the other end of Gilbert’s call then says she is getting teary-eyed while listening to the veteran trooper choke up.

“10-4, and you’re making me cry too,” the dispatcher says. “Did everyone copy that?”
Gilbert, continuing to fight back tears, then completes his last call.
“As I said, it’s been an honor and a great privilege to serve this great department and work with all of you fine people,” she says. “Thirty-seven years and three weeks later, it’s been a great ride. Thank you very much and keep smiling.”

The dispatcher then wishes Gilbert luck as he moves forward in retirement.
“Thank you for your service, too,” she says. “We appreciate everything that you have done and congratulations on your tenure… good luck in your future endeavors.”
