Forget Rob Gronkowski, Chris Matthews and the puppy in the Budweiser commercial. The real heroes of Super Bowl XLIX were Clyde Haygood and Jake Bailey, a.k.a. the men responsible for keeping Katy Perry‘s hair and makeup on lockdown during the singer’s extremely energetic 12-minute performance.

“Katy specifically asked for the perkiest pony you’ve ever seen!” hairstylist Haygood says. He constructed it using a human hair ponytail with various lengths of hair sewn onto the inside and outside for extra bounce and volume. To ensure that it was comfortable enough for the singer to wear throughout the show (and whip around during a particularly aggressive “I Kissed a Girl” rendition with Lenny Kravitz), Haygood sewed an elastic band to the base on the inside of the pony and attached a toggle closure so it opened and closed around the star’s own hair.
To set the pony, he separated it into five three-inch sections and used a two-inch iron to create “S” waves. He then sprayed each curl with KMS California FREESHAPE 2-in-1 Styling + Finishing Spray. Next, he slicked-back Perry’s hair with gel and attached the pony to her head, smoothing flyways with a touch of wax.
For her makeup look, Perry’s longtime artist, Bailey (who confessed he’s been “understandably nervous knowing my work would be seen by millions and millions of people”) opted to go with a “classic Katy look — elongated cat eyes, lots of mascara, super sparkly gold and silver glitter, and a bold red lip for glamour and showmanship.”
To create the liner look, he used COVERGIRL Perfect Point Plus Eyeliner in Black Onyx and painted an adhesive just above the black liner and placed a mix of gold and silver glitter on the adhesive with a tiny eyeliner brush.
And to achieve the perfect red lip, he applied COVERGIRL Lip Perfection Lip Liner in Hot, followed by COVERGIRL Colorlicious Lipstick in Seduce Scarlet and a “tiny dollop” of COVERGIRL Lip Lava in Mauva Lava.
