See the Best Flats From New York Fashion Week Spring 2014

Runway shoes often skew towards the impractical: super high heels, teetering platforms, and chunky wedges that appear impossible to walk in. But for next spring, designers are noticing how great and flattering a flat shoe can be. Menswear-inspired oxfords, strappy sandals, and Birkenstock-inspired footwear popped up on runway after runway last week in New York, paired with everything from floaty dresses to cropped trousers.

Take, for example, the bejeweled slides at Tibi, which continued the haute pool-shoe trend from resort. Or the swirled Christian Louboutin lace-ups at Peter Som, which show how feminine a good man shoe can be. Rodarte featured slick metallic snakeskin slip-ons while The Row debuted their first footwear line, consisting of supple leather mules and bi-color loafers. Those looking to bare some toes in sandals will be happy to see fisherman-inspired ones from Proenza Schouler, minimal white versions at Philosophy by Natalie Ratabesi, and even a weird-but-cool hybrid menswear-meets-slingback at 3.1 Phillip Lim. Not convinced? Even Marc Jacobs skipped the stilettos in favor of tasseled moccasins and high fashion Tevas. Stock up on those Birkenstocks now because it looks like you can be comfortable and on-trend next season. Click ahead to view our favorites from the week.
