The latest Variety cover story is something of a topical doozy: It's a wholesale assessment of the way women are treated in Hollywood, from the gender pay gap to the lack of positions offered to female directors and women in the biz. Sandra Bullock, who has previously been outspoken on the issue of gender inequality, chimed in to righteously reaffirm that she cannot take it anymore.
"It’s a bigger issue than money," Bullock told Variety. "I know we’re focused on the money part right now. That’s just a byproduct. I keep saying, 'Why is it that no one is standing up and saying you can’t say that about a woman?' We’re mocked and judged in the media and articles." She continued, saying that when she walks down the red carpet, "I’m going to be asked about my dress and my hair while the man standing next to me will be asked about his performance and political issues.”
In October, Bullock said she was glad Hollywood got a "spanking" over pay inequality, a subject that was recently brought into the stark spotlight through an editorial by Jennifer Lawrence. Despite the disparity, Bullock claims she tries her best to stay positive so her son can grow up only knowing gender equality. "I hope in my lifetime, for him, everything is a level-playing field. We can hope."
