When we first saw Alexander Wang's debut collection for Balenciaga, featuring a knit top lacquered in white paint that created an effect similar to the cracked, splaying veins of Carrara marble, we didn't realize that it marked the beginning of a big trend. As an antidote to leopard or zebra or even traditional houndstooth, the unpredictable veins of marbleized surfaces give texture to a garment, but also a sophisticated earthiness.
