We hope this latest venture will fare better with critics than her River Island line: Rihanna is teaming up with MAC as their first ever celebrity “creative partner,” kicking off with a year-long cosmetics collaboration called RiRi [Hearts] MAC.
The focus of her collection will be RiRi Woo, a lipstick inspired by the singer’s favorite red lip shade, MAC’s Ruby Woo, which will launch in May to coincide with her Diamonds tour stop at N.Y.C.’s Barclays Center. She’ll continue to roll out seasonal collections, which will include 31 products, from lipstick to false lashes and nail polish.
MAC has worked with several stars in the past, including Nicki Minaj and Christina Aguilera, but Rihanna’s the first to land the “creative partner” title. “We always say that MAC likes to go on a date but doesn’t really want to go into a relationship,” John Demsey, group president of Estée Lauder Cos. Inc., MAC’s parent company, tells WWD. “This relationship with Rihanna is a long-term one.”
The beauty collection will add to the singer’s empire, which already includes multiple fragrances. “Being creative is something that I love,” Rihanna tells WWD. “My makeup looks, my fashion looks … they help me to express myself as an artist.”
And MAC execs aren’t worried that the singer’s sometimes-turbulent personal life will affect the brand’s reputation. “She’s a grown woman, and whatever makes her happy makes us happy. Life’s complicated. Far be it for us to judge,” Demsey says.
