Red Carpet Trend Report: The Scoop on Wacky Hemlines, White Heels & ‘Too Much Look’

Eva Longoria, Heidi Klum shoes

We like to stay on top of trends, but we have to admit that the two looks seen all over the red carpet lately have us a little surprised. And yet, the stars wearing them look so cute that we may put prejudices aside and give them a try ourselves. See which styles are gaining ground — and which one we’re ready to leave in the dust — below:

Up: Funky hemlines. More advanced than your basic high-low or handkerchief hemlines, stars like Halle Berry and Nicole Richie have been sporting fitted skirts with triangular cutouts. This look has the same thigh-baring effect as a high slit without being quite as obvious — though we strongly recommend practicing sitting and standing in this one before taking it public.

Up: White heels. Though Memorial Day is still months away (we sigh, as we stare at the snow coming down), stars are taking their pristine pumps out of retirement and onto the red carpet. We’ve seen Eva Longoria, Ginnifer Goodwin, Giuliana Rancic and Olivia Munn in pumps and sandals from eggshell to ivory — and that’s just this week. We’re into this totally new take on winter white.

Down: Too Much Look. When you’re as beautiful as Heidi Klum and Cat Deeley, you don’t have to try hard to make an impact. And yet, Klum wore another super-sexy, super-skimpy and body-baring outfit on the red carpet this week. The supermodel’s look would have been chic with a crewneck and plain-Jane pumps, but instead, the effect was strained. Lesson: pick one asset to highlight instead of five.
