Red Carpet Trend Report: Hollywood's Loving Leather - But Not So Into Summery Styles

Trend report: leather pants, great bootsKevin Mazur/Getty for JCPenney; Jean-Claude Cohen/Visual/Zuma; Jon Kopaloff/FilmMagic

In our weekly roundup of the looks that are gaining fashion ground (and the ones losing their style street cred), we saw lots of styles with sex appeal — and one that’s just a little too sweet and spring-y to catch on in December.

Up: Leather pants. Jeans took a backseat this week to another wardrobe staple: Leather pants. Whether it’s because they’re a little dressier than denim or because they’re less forgiving (and thus a constant reminder to consume those Christmas cocktails in moderation), stars from Jamie Chung (above) to Lea Michele (in J Brand) to Tina Fey (also in J Brand) was on the sexy-pants bandwagon. That’s not to mention all the stars who squeezed in last-minute shopping in their leather leggings, from Julianne Hough to Kourtney Kardashian.

Up: Sexy boots. Flip through Last Night’s Look and one thing becomes clear: This was the week for stars to break out their sexiest, highest and most sassy boots. Salma Hayek joined a group of celebs that included Leona Lewis, Heidi Klum and Lindsay Lohan, who all stepped out in their best boots. (This happened off the red carpet, too — so if you’ve been hesitant about breaking out your over-the-knee stunners, now’s the time!)

Down: Summer dresses. Listen, Kiernan Shipka can do no wrong. And if this was any month between April and September, we’d be putting feelers out for a lookalike. But worn as is, her flirty floral look is a little too lightweight to gain traction on the red carpet right now — there’s a reason designers put out collections by season, after all.
