This week, stars tried all sorts of fun things on the red carpet — but they almost unanimously left one shoe style in the dust.
Up: Mixing Brights. Yes, Gwyneth Paltrow‘s grape Victoria Beckham mini is adorable on its own, but pairing it with those tangerine Michael Kors sandals elevates the look infinitely. This is a much easier way to try the ongoing mix-and-match trend than, say, mixing prints — but though the difficulty factor is low, the impact is still just as high (see: Emmy Rossum here). Try this with unexpected color pairings, like lemon and lime, magenta and cobalt or emerald and violet.
Up: High Necklines. Perhaps stars aren’t quite ready to bare their bikini-ready décolletage, because necklines were higher than ever this week, as seen on Rossum, above. From Chrissy Teigen’s turtleneck to Jada Pinkett Smith’s flowy halter, Zosia Mamet’s ’60s-inspired shift to Diane Kruger’s high-necked blouse, we saw a number of creative ways to be all buttoned up.

Down: Satin platform pumps. Wedding season is just about to begin, but we’re already sick of these “bridesmaid-y,” clunky platforms, and apparently stars are too. Though Julianne Hough wore yellow satin, we’re seeing more single-sole pumps, pointy-toe heels and fun, festive sandals than this once-ubiquitous shoe style.
