We're always fans of Rachel Comey's cool-girl fashions, from her cult-favorite boots to her standout dresses. So when we heard that she had designed a capsule collection for Montauk hot spot Surf Lodge, we had to hear more, especially with a few key weeks of Summer beach weather remaining. Read on to find out what inspired the tees and what we can expect from her Spring 2014 collection, hitting the runway in just a few weeks at New York Fashion Week!
POPSUGAR: What inspired the collaboration?
Rachel Comey: We were brainstorming of a great place to experiment with retail as we are aiming to open a flagship at some point in the future, and we thought of our new swim collection and where it would find its best audience. Naturally, we thought of the east end during July, and naturally, we thought of Surf Lodge as the focal point of some quintessential weekend fun.
PS: What inspired the print on the t-shirts? How did you create it?
RC: We were inspired by the natural extremes of the east end. Montauk has such beautiful light and an amazing landscape. It inspired an abstract painting that we in turn screen-printed onto a set of tees. We also made a nautical-inspired tee in the Surf Lodge's colors and made a hoodie for those breezy evenings after a day in the sun.
PS: Does creating pieces meant to be worn on or near the beach influence your process?
RC: Definitely. Often times we're designing swimsuits that can be translated into items you wear on and off the beach to dinner or around town.
PS: What makes the perfect t-shirt to you?
RC: I think the fabric is an essential part of the perfect t-shirt. It should have a cool dry hand but still feel soft and worn in. I like a simple easy shape that fits a bit boxy and has a nice neckline.
PS: When you pack for a beach getaway, what do you have to have in your bag?
RC: Custom Rachel Comey Sunsail Cabana, RC x Prism sunglasses, our Dune dress, and some icy cocktail fixings.
PS: Any hints you can give us on the upcoming Spring 2014 collection?
RC: Cotton and sequins.
