President Donald Trump doubled down on his Wednesday comments about his alleged mistreatment by the American people in an early morning tweet on Thursday.
“This is the single greatest witch hunt of a politician in American history,” he wrote just before 7 a.m. EST.
In a second tweet a few hours later, the president addressed the appointment of a special counsel to look into Russia’s connection to the 2016 Trump election campaign.
“With all of the illegal acts that took place in the Clinton campaign & Obama Administration, there was never a special counsel appointed,” wrote Trump.

On Wednesday, former former FBI Director Robert Mueller was appointed to the special counsel role by deputy attorney general Rod J. Rosenstein in the wake of FBI Director James Comey’s firing, reported the New York Times.
In a statement on the matter, Trump said, “As I have stated many times, a thorough investigation will confirm what we already know — there was no collusion between my campaign and any foreign entity. I look forward to this matter concluding quickly. In the meantime, I will never stop fighting for the people and the issues that matter most to the future of our country.”
The decision follows a report earlier this week that alleged that the president asked Comey to shut down the investigation into the administration’s former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn.

The Times cited a memo that Comey wrote after his meeting with Trump following Flynn’s resignation amid revelations that he had discussed Russian sanctions with the country’s Ambassador Sergey Kislyak on a phone call in December 2016. A White House official denied the report, however, calling it “not a truthful or accurate portrayal of the conversation between the president and Mr. Comey.”

On Wednesday, Trump complained about the investigations while delivering a commencement speech at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in Connecticut, insisting that, “no politician in history … has been treated worse or more unfairly.”
