In the third installment of our New York Greats series, Elettra Weidemann sat down with Donna Karan moments after her colorful fall 2013 collection breezed down the runway. Fresh from the backstage chaos, Karan told Weidemann why she hates the traditional Fashion Week schedule of showing collections six months before they hit stores. "It drives me crazy," Karan said. "I have a real conflict as a designer showing in Fashion Week because the consumer is now seeing it, but we want to excite her about spring, but she's seeing fall." Karan also talked about the struggle of balancing work and home life, especially during a 1974 Fashion Week when Karan's then-boss Anne Klein died of cancer the day before her collection debuted and one week after Karan gave birth. "I wanted to stay home and be a mother," she told Weidemann, "but the universe did not have that idea [for me]." See more in our video interview above.
