It’s not as if we didn’t expect leather to be a big thing on the show’s red carpet Sunday night. It’s just that we even with a crystal ball, we never could have predicted the second-skin material would appear in such, how do we put this, interesting forms: a skirt made of belts, drop-crotch capri pants and a pair of men’s quilted basketball shorts.
Miley Cryus led the leather-clad pack (and kept up her unofficial campaign for the role of Anastasia Steele) in a black bra, see-through topper and a dominatrix-compliant buckled mini, all Saint Laurent.
“To be a trendsetter, you have to have an amazing group of people to follow your trends. I encourage you guys to always be different. That’s what fashion is all about,” the singer said as she paraded her sexy ensemble on stage during her acceptance speech for the Candie’s Fashion Trendsetter award.
We didn’t need to see her with an award to know that she’s a trendsetter. Because Hollywood has been following in her leather-loving footsteps for a while. Case in point: Naya Rivera also bared her bra and belly button and obsession with allover leather in whiplash-inducing Alice + Olivia separates. The look was comprised of a bustier and matching harem-pants-meet-tailored-trousers.

Then there’s Nelly whose purple, quilted, draw-string leather basketball shorts might be the rapper’s biggest statement since the whole “bandage under the eye” era of his life. He’s since ditched the Band-Aid, but just in case the bold bottoms (which remind us of a Chanel bag) weren’t enough, he added a graphic tee featuring a caricature of a diamond riding a skateboard and some seriously colorful shoes.
