Meet the Cut’s New Astrologer

By day, David Scoroposki works as a fashion editor at Town & Country magazine. But when the stars are out he turns into his alter ego: a New York–based astrologer who happens to do readings for private clients. Scoroposki's first post for the Cut was a reading of Prince Georgie's astrological chart, right after the announcement of the royal baby's long-awaited birth. Now, we're excited to announce that, starting tomorrow, this pensive astrologer will regularly be peering into the skies, demystifying space, and consulting his star charts to share his weekly horoscope wisdom with you. Read on to catch a glimpse into his workspace, tools, and library, and to learn all about rulerships of the seven heavenly bodies, the house system, and more.

What's your sign?
I was born with Capricorn rising, the sun in Sagittarius, and the moon in Pisces.

When would you say you first got interested in astrology?
Growing up in New York, I went with my school to the Hayden Planetarium at the Museum of Natural History. I discovered a vast and compelling universe and I learned that the cosmos is governed by precise mathematical laws. It was clear then that something more profound and deliberate was taking place. Later, when I read the classics, the planets came to life and were personified.

You've worked in fashion as well. Do you think your interests were interlinked at all?
Those who work in fashion media are interested in astrology particularly because they want to know what is going to happen next; fashion is very future-oriented.

What type of astrology do you practice?
I combine modern and medieval methods of astrology in my practice; the medieval method is the highest development of astrological science after its origins in Hellenistic Egypt and prior to its decline in seventheenth-century Europe. Those who practice this method use the whole sign-house system, calculate the dignities and debilities of the planets, and assign the rulerships to the original seven heavenly bodies. I do interpret the aspects of the outer planets, Neptune, Uranus and Pluto, but we know less about these than the original seven simply because they were discovered more recently. Also, their influence tends to be generational since they move so slowly.

What's a typical reading for you with a private client?
I start without any preconceptions. Then I simply read the horoscope and progressions. Having learned the symbolic language of astrology, I simply translate the meaning of the planets in the houses, in various configurations with each other, etc., into simple English. I read the horoscope; I do not “interpret” it or rely on any intuitive process.

Who are some of your favorite astrologers and what tools do you tend to use?
Today, astrologers work with software to arrive at calculations; sometimes, I still use an ephemeris or make a natal chart by hand for a friend. Otherwise, I use a computer like everyone else. I was taught from translations of ancient Hebrew and Arabic manuscripts.

What do you hope to bring to the Cut readers? And what do you hope the Cut readers will take away from your readings?
The ancient Greek aphorism “Know thyself” was inscribed at the Temple of Apollo at Delphi. Our character doesn’t change nor does our fate. What may change is our understanding of both, but only if that is our fate. It is wise to accept our fate. It frees us from unnecessary and ceaseless striving.
