Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton wore one of Princess Diana’s beloved tiaras to the Diplomatic Reception at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday, Dec. 8. The royal wore the Lover’s Knot Tiara, which was commissioned by Queen Mary in 1913 and made famous by the late Princess Di.
The lover’s knot motif was popular in the 19th century, and Princess Diana wore the tiara — which was a wedding gift from the Queen in 1981 — on numerous occasions. This is the first time the tiara has been worn since Prince William and Prince Harry’s mother’s death in 1997.
The tiara features 38 oriental drop-shaped pearls that hand from each lover’s knot bow. In total, the tiara consists of 19 openwork diamond frames. Princess Diana wore the tiara for the first time at the State Opening of Parliament in 1981.
Middleton paired the royal accessory with a powder blue gown and the same diamond drop earrings she wore to the China state dinner in October, the event where she wore another family heirloom — the Lotus Flower Tiara.
As reported at the time, Middleton wore Queen Elizabeth’s tiara, which was created from a pearl and diamond necklace, with a stunning red Jenny Packham gown.
Prince William’s wife has donned a tiara only a handful of times. She first wore the royal accessory at her 2011 wedding.
