Julianne Hough's DWTS Photo Diary: Week One's All About the Glam

Julianne Hough may be on the judging panel instead of the dance floor in her new role on Dancing With the Stars, but that doesn’t mean you won’t see her in another sequin all season. In fact, she kicked off her first night at the table with a super-glitzy silver beaded gown, complete with a retro pin curled hairdo and a neckline that had host Tom Bergeron joking that “the ballroom is bursting with enthusiasm!” Hough, 26, will be joining us each week to share personal pics from her pre-show prep — below, get a peek at her week one getting-ready routine.

“I loved my look tonight! I felt sexy, confident, and as though I went back in time!” Hough tells PEOPLE of her showstopping silver gown complete with daring neckline and high slit. And it was no accident that this “sexy, elegant and glamorous” number was the dress chosen for week one, says stylist Anita Patrickson.

“For the premiere episode we wanted to come out with a bang,” she shares. “This beaded gown felt sophisticated but sexy. It exudes Old Hollywood glamour but with a modern edge, which we found with the simple jewelry and clean pointed toe pumps.” And there wasn’t a lot of back-and-forth about what to wear, Patrickson says. “The moment we put it on, we knew it was the one! It felt like a modern day Marilyn Monroe moment.”

Hairstylist Riawna Capri had almost exactly the same sentiments. “We were inspired by the dress to recreate an Old Hollywood glamour look, especially with her short blonde hair,” Capri tells PEOPLE. “As soon as she put it on, we knew it had be a Marilyn Monroe feel — polished but a little undone!”

Most importantly, Hough had the thumbs up (so to speak) from one very important member of her glam squad: Her puppy, Lexi, who looked on approvingly in the background at her mom’s final look. Want to emulate this outfit in the future? Suggests Patrickson, “When wearing a fully beaded dress or heavily embellished dress, simplify the accessories and think of the dress as an accessory in itself.” (No word from Lexi, but we’re guessing she agrees.)
