The good news is that the economy added 204,000 jobs last month, according to today’s Bureau of Labor Statistics report, more than were expected. The bad news is that women got more than their share of the lousy ones. Two-thirds of the 90,000 jobs women gained were in low-wage leisure, hospitality, and retail sectors, compared to one-third of the 114,000 jobs men gained, continuing the recovery trend that experts blame on disappearing teaching and other public-sector jobs. According to the National Women’s Law Center, 60 percent of women’s job gains during the first four years of the recovery came in the ten largest low-wage jobs, versus just 20 percent of men’s gains. You are hereby authorized to roll your eyes next time you encounter the term mancession.
