Whether you’ll be cheering on the horses from the fanciest box at the races or sipping mint juleps at home, the Kentucky Derby gives you a great excuse to break out your fanciest hat.
Some of us go for the full custom number, while others are looking to get some more use out of their Royal Wedding attire, but regardless of where your topper originated, there’s something about sipping a cocktail in a glamorous number that can’t be beat — as these stars can attest.

Three of our favorite looks from years past belong to Paula Patton (left), in a head-turning number that she clearly feels great in; Chelsea Clinton, in a My Fair Lady-esque pastel chapeau that matches her dress and shades her from the sun; and Vanessa Lachey, who looks like she may be among those of us looking for another wear from her Princess Kate-inspired fascinator.
One thing to keep in mind when planning to go big, bold or broad-brimmed: a lady never blocks the view of the other spectators, so if you’re planning to cheer on Rosie Napravnik in style, do it from the back row.
