TORONTO - The use of digital prints in both apparel and accessories for spring lend an innovative spin to both new and familiar patterns, creating distinctive images that can appear other-wordly.
Unsure of how to embrace such a fashion-forward look for the warmer months? Here are three tips to get you started:
1. Pick your print.
It's go big or go home. From bursts of florals to kaleidoscopic patterns, there's no shortage of selection in the vast array of digital prints. Despite the differences, one commonality is the scale of print which is sizeable both in its bold strokes of colour and large patterns.
2. Select a statement piece.
The fashion fearless may have no trouble with the boldly graphic range of digital prints. But that doesn't mean those who are a bit more conservative or reserved with their style choices can't give it a go.
"A great place to start is ... with one fabulous printed piece that really speaks to you," said Winners spokeswoman Sarah Smithers. "Perhaps adding a printed accessory whether it's a gorgeous printed silk scarf or even a printed beach tote — that's really an easy way to test-drive the trends."
3. Pair complimentary colours
Can you team your mirrored print dress with bloom-patterned heels? Smithers said you can mix and match different prints and patterns as much or as little as you prefer — depending on your comfort level, of course. But consistency is crucial in one key regard.
"Another thing to keep in mind when you are mixing prints — whether digital or otherwise — is you want to make sure that the tones are the same. So keep them in the same colour family," Smithers said.
Equally important to teaming complimentary hues is being mindful of the scale of contrasting prints, like partnering larger patterns with smaller ones.
For example, if you decide to go bold with a skirt showcasing an oversized floral print, Smithers suggested a more subtle approach with the accessory, like polishing off the look with a smaller-print check scarf.
