How To Get Your Hair In Shape For The Gym

Swimsuit season is all the motivation we need to get back to the gym. Cute workout clothes help us to feel pretty confident while lifting weights or doing squats. But our hair? Not so cute.

We usually put our locks up in a high ponytail to keep them out of our face. However, this often leaves the scalp tender to the touch, and the elastic holder creates a not-so-cute imprint. Then we are forced to decide whether we should shampoo post-workout... but everything just hurts too much.

To help us all get our strands in shape before and after exercising, TRESemmé celebrity stylist John D. shares his five top workout hair tips:

  • To avoid the tell-tale "dent" that seems impossible to flatten after a workout, try a loose topknot instead of a ponytail. Loosely twist the hair on top of the head and secure with a few hairpins rather than an elastic. After your workout, release the pins and shake out your hair for a volumized look.
  • To protect your hair from breakage caused by tight elastics and hairpins, try holding the hair back from the face and shoulders with a handkerchief or cloth headband. This will limit breakage and will eliminate dents.

  • After you exercise, quickly blow-dry your hair to get rid of any excess moisture that may have accumulated during your workout. Apply a dry shampoo like TRESemmé Fresh Start, concentrating on the scalp and roots of the hair. Then, shake the hair out using your fingertips to evenly distribute the product. Your hair will be refreshed and ready to go.
  • When you wash your hair at the gym, be sure to skip the water-downed shampoo and conditioner that's usually stocked in the shower. Instead, suds up post-workout with deep conditioning hair products like TRESemmé Platinum Strength Shampoo & Conditioner to repair damaged hair and restore shine.
  • If you decide to use a blow dryer, flat iron or other styling tools, be sure to apply a heat protectant to shield your hair from harmful heat and prevent split ends.
