Guess Who Won The Woolmark Prize In 1954?

The Woolmark Prize isn't nearly as coveted as, say, an Oscar or an Emmy. But the fashion award, given by The Woolmark Company for over five decades, is certainly worth paying attention to.

Today Woolmark announced the nominees for the 2013 prize, and the names will be familiar to anyone who follows fashion's up-and-comers: Altuzarra, Ohne Titel, Bibhu Mohapatra, Timo Weiland, Creatures of the Wind, Tucker, Daniel Vosovic, Wes Gordon, WHIT and Giulietta.

Some of these designers are well on their way to becoming household names -- Altuzarra received the 2012 CFDA Swarovski Award for Womenswear, while Creatures of the Wind was nominated in the same category. Wes Gordon was named a finalist for the 2012 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund. But none have yet risen to the ranks of Woolmark's most famous winners: Yves Saint Laurent and Karl Lagerfeld.

In 1954, 19-year-old Saint Laurent and 21-year-old Lagerfeld both won Woolmark Prizes in the coat category. (Colette Bracchi, who won in the dress category, dropped into fashion obscurity.) Saint Laurent took both the first and third prize, while Lagerfeld placed second. This, according to The Beautiful Fall's Alicia Drake, would set into motion a decades-long rivalry between the two famed designers as they moved from gig to gig within the industry.

Below, see a photo of the moment that launched two superstars. Do you think any of this year's Woolmark Prize nominees have the potential to become icons à la Karl and Yves?
