The front row photographers tend to be in their rarest form at Donna Karan shows. It was at DKNY that they cracked puns with Pretty Little Liars starlet Shay Mitchell, and then on Monday afternoon at Donna Karan — while we huddled together waiting for Uma Thurman to arrive — they got to chatting about CBS's Blue Bloods, and how great it is, and how funny Bridget Moynahan was the last time they were at a junket with her, and — hey — we finally just figured out which demographic is keeping Blue Bloods on the air. Photographers of the world, Tom Selleck's 'stache owes you a debt.
Thurman arrived from backstage at the absolute last moment, in a whirl of cream-colored fabric and flat-ironed hair and with the maximum amount of dramatic fanfare, suggesting that she either learned a lot from her Smash character or largely inspired it. But while we waited, and even endured an "Uma? Oprah. Oprah? Uma" joke, her Smash-mate (and outright Broadway legend) Bernadette Peters stood patiently to the side, looking sleek in black boots, and making cheery conversation with Deborra-Lee Furness, a.k.a. Mrs. Hugh Jackman. We know Peters braved the elements like the rest of us mortals because we saw her before the show started, trying to enter the venue through the wrong door. And yet Peters' signature corkscrew curls were perfect, despite the fact that it was 96% humidity outside. We would have asked her for her anti-frizz secret, but we didn't want to interrupt Mrs. Hugh Jackman.
Boardwalk Empire's Gretchen Mol entered from the front of the venue as well, looking perhaps the best we've seen her recently in a flirty black dress and a blonde updo. As she was hustled past the press to her seat, we spied Peters take a step back to avoid being crushed. "Movie stars," she shrugged to a bystander with a grin. Oh, Bernadette. Don't sell yourself short. We saw Annie. You will always be a movie star to us.
