Five Lessons We Learned from ‘What Not to Wear’

What Not To Wear is coming to an end after 10 seasons, and you better believe that after watching countless hours of Stacy London and Clinton Kelly make over some of America’s most hopeless cases, we’ve absorbed a few rules. Below, we rounded up the five most important tenets of the stylish duo’s show:

1. BAGGY IS AS BAD AS IT GETS

The most common way to hide pudge (cover it with shapeless garments) is also one of the biggest issues the hosts have with subjects’ wardrobes. “[You're] making yourself look worse,” Clinton once told a fan of gaucho pants and oversize sweaters, before convincing her to try slimming dresses with defined waistlines.

2. BUT SUPERTIGHT IS PRETTY BAD TOO

“Anything that’s too tight will draw too much attention to your curves,” the hosts explain on the show’s site. And here’s something you probably didn’t know: Second-skin garments will actually make you appear shorter and thicker as opposed to longer and leaner.

3. GET A PRO BRA FITTING

“It’s like putting a grapefruit in a slingshot meant for a pebble!” Clinton famously said of a contestant wearing a cup five sizes off. You’d think a woman would know if she were wearing a bra too big or too small for her, but episode after episode has taught us that’s not true. Hence their conviction that going for a sizing session with a professional should be on every woman’s to-do list.

4. ACCESSORIES DON’T ALWAYS MAKE THE OUTFIT

Yeah, we know, this goes against everything you’ve ever heard. But when a woman stepped into the 360º mirror wearing a terry cloth pool coverup, plus a pricey Louis Vuitton bag and Bulgari sunglasses, we were forced to agree with Stacy and Clinton that sometimes even the best add-ons are powerless to elevate a truly terrible piece of clothing.

5. STOCK YOUR CLOSET WITH THESE 2 THINGS

If the WNTW drinking game was to take a sip every time Stacy and Clinton recommended deep-V necklines or trench coats, you’d be tipsy by the end of each episode. They believe every body type looks good in both styles, and after seeing 325 makeovers (many of them featuring these pieces), we’re inclined to agree.
