Note to self: Find some way to score an invite to David Burtka‘s next dinner party.
Judging from the chef’s new Food Network special, Life’s a Party with David Burtka (premiering September 18th at 12pm ET/PT), the chef — and husband of Neil Patrick Harris — knows how to put together a great gathering. In an exclusive clip of the show, he is seen preparing for a rooftop birthday bash he is throwing for his best friend, actor James Carpinello.
And Burtka is a stickler for details. “As a chef, I like to be totally prepared. I’m so big on lists. I love lists,” says Burtka, as he checks off items like “marinate chicken” and “marinate asparagus.” “But as a father I have learned to go with the flow.”

And it’s a good thing, because Burtka and Harris’s 5-year-old twins, Gideon and Harper (adorably) help the chef get ready for the party and are also in attendance.
Also rounding out the guest list is close pal Kelly Ripa, who is seen excitedly greeting the kids when she walks in, actress Rachel Harris, Carpinello’s wife Amy Acker and their children.

As for the host’s husband? “I regret not being able to attend,” says Harris to the camera, clearing in a different location. “Or am I?” (Spoiler alert: he shows up and surprises the gang).
