If her Instagram caption was any indication, Eva Longoria was completely floored this weekend when her longtime boyfriend, Jose Antonio Baston, popped the question. She posted a romantic photo of them both that read, “Ummmm so this happened….#Engaged #Dubai #Happiness”
The only thing more unexpected than Baston’s Dubai-set proposal? The super unusual (and huge!) ring he did it with.

Judging from the Instagram, this is no traditional halo-set giant Hollywood diamond. Instead, Baston appeared to have selected something much more surprising, but with the same eye-catching mega-carat brilliance. The ring looks to be a substantially-sized ruby surrounded by clusters of smaller diamonds — and of course, the Telenovela star wore the perfect red dress to match her new bauble.

While rubies are still fairly unexpected these days for proposals, the stone seems to be gaining popularity among stars – both Simpson sisters memorably sport rings featuring the vibrant gemstone. And considering the sapphire craze that occurred when Princess Kate got engaged, we wouldn’t be surprised if Longoria kicked off a whole new bride-to-be trend.
