It may be nearly one month since DJ Khaled’s son Asahd looked back on his first year in style, but his birthday will sure never go out of style, according to his dad.
“It’s important to throw your children the biggest birthday parties ever not only to wish them happy birthday and their blessings, but I’m teaching my son it’s his birthday every day,” DJ Khaled told PEOPLE during the announcement for FOX’s new reality singing competition The Four, where he will sit on the judging panel alongside Meghan Trainor, Sean “Diddy” Combs and Republic Records’ Charlie Walk.
“When I say it’s his birthday every day, God gave us life, we’re breathing, we have a family – we have to celebrate that,” he explains. “Even if something ain’t going right that day, I go outside and I breathe and I say, ‘Man, God is so great, I’ve got life,’ even if it’s a bad day because I could overcome it because I’m breathing.”

If the Grammy-nominated record producer had to give his and fiancée Nicole Tuck‘s son one key to live by forever, it would simply be to live in love.
“I’m teaching my son, ‘When it comes down to Mommy and Daddy, you’re only gonna see love and inspiration and beauty and motivation, and we’re here for you,’ ” says DJ Khaled, 41.
“So when he grows up and something’s not love, he’s gonna know,” explains the proud dad. “My son wakes up every day smiling, he goes to bed smiling. That’s what it’s about. He’s my life.”

DJ Khaled and Combs organized the six-figure buyout of the newly reopened nightclub on the afternoon of Oct. 21 at LIV at Fontainebleau in Miami, which was decorated in a jungle theme and featured elements from The Lion King.
Always a fan of twinning, the father-son duo showed up in matching attire, sporting elaborately patterned coordinating shirts and aqua-colored pants.
“He’s just like me. He has great energy,” DJ Khaled told PEOPLE in November 2016 of Asahd shortly after his birth. “He’s got the glow of a young mogul — the glow of a young icon. He’s amazing.”
The Four premieres Jan. 4 on FOX.
