Derek Jeter put a ring on it! The retired New York Yankee confirmed his engagement to girlfriend of three years, Hannah Davis, in a blog post on his website The Player’s Tribune. But it’s not the type of gushy post you’d expect. In fact, if you didn’t read it carefully, you might have missed his subtle reveal.

The pro athlete penned a love letter, not to Davis, but to his dog Kane, an Italian Mastiff he got as a present from his longtime love, who he refers to as his “fiancée.”
“I had no idea what I was in for as a new dog owner. He was a Christmas gift last year from my fiancée, whose family had Mastiffs growing up,” the star writes. “I’ve never owned a pet in my life.”
Jeter, 41, retired from the Yankees in 2014, and he quips that being a dad to his pup is his new full-time job.

Davis, 25, is best known for her famed cover shot on the 2105 Sports Illustrated, an honor bestowed upon her after only two years in the magazine’s sexy lineup.
The couple made their red carpet debut at the 2015 Met Gala this past spring, and have been spotted out and about in the months since, including another high-profile date at this year’s Espy Awards, where Derek also brought his sister Sharlee.
Dying to see the ring? The model stepped out Monday in N.Y.C. sporting the mega-carat round sparkler, and the perfect pale-pink mani.
Jeter has had many high-profile relationships in the past (Minka Kelly, Jessica Biel, the list goes on …), but he’s been dating Davis since 2012, and the duo has been sparking up engagement rumors ever since.
Last December, Jeter revealed to PEOPLE he is anxious to settle down and start a family.
“Kids nowadays are going to be the leaders of the future, and the leaders for not only Jalen [Jeter’s nephew], but my kids one day when I have them,” he shared. “I look forward to being a dad.” (Those kids will have the best genes ever.)
