If there’s one thing Carrie Underwood‘s name is synonymous with — besides a serious set of pipes and that subtle Southern twang — it’s surely her long, golden blonde, loose curls. Which is exactly what makes her latest hair transformation such a surprising move for the country star.

Carrie revealed her new shorter do last night on Instagram, just prior to her performance at the Grand Ole Opry. Upon first glance, it almost seems like this change-up could just be a hair optical illusion, thanks to her selfie angle. But her hairstylist, Melissa Schleicher, confirmed via her Instagram that the “Jesus Take the Wheel” singer really is sporting a freshly bobbed mane.
While this may not seem like a major beauty transformation for most, considering how rarely Underwood changes her look at all, a few inches off of her signature superlong glossy waves is still pretty substantial. She even gave a glimpse of the side view while performing at a benefit for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, really showing how much length she lost.

The American Idol winner let her new hair take center stage last night, pairing it with a simple monochromatic dress, a smudgy smokey eye, and glossy pink lips. Since the mystery of Carrie’s new cut has finally been solved, just one question remains: now that she’s both blonde and bobbed, will she finally get a coveted invitation to join T.Swift’s girl gang?
