"I'm quite emotional about it, of course," Brad Pitt tells USA Today about the double mastectomy Angelina Jolie underwent as a preventative measure against breast cancer. "She could have stayed absolutely private about it and I don't think anyone would have been none the wiser with such good results. But it was really important to her to share the story and that others would understand it doesn't have to be a scary thing. In fact, it can be an empowering thing, and something that makes you stronger and us stronger." Pitt also recalls how Jolie, "just weeks after she'd had truly major surgery," maintained commitments in the Congo, at London's G8 Foreign Ministers Conference, and at a New York event honoring Pakistan's Malala Yousafzai. (At the time of the latter, the Internet poked fun at Jolie for wearing a supposedly Star Wars-y/Game of Thrones-ish getup — way to go, Internet.) Pitt and Jolie got the kids involved in the process at home, too. "We set up our own little post-op recovery that became pretty fun," Pitt says. "You make an adventure out of it."
