If there's anyone you can count on to defy the rules of fashion, it's Billie Eilish. When it comes to the warmer months, the general consensus is to wear fewer layers and perhaps more revealing clothing. For Eilish, however, a transitional spring day called for the complete opposite on May 31 when she took to Instagram with a photo dump to close out the month. In a fitting room, she revived the 2000s skirt-over-pants trend with a shocking amount of layers. For what appeared to be a casual shopping day, Eilish captioned her photo with the division emoji, perhaps reflective of her recent split from singer-songwriter Jesse Rutherford. The 21-year-old musician wore a leopard bra under a mesh top with a camouflage tank over it; a light-brown hooded jacket; a black punk, pleated skirt with red stars layered over black, baggy jeans; and, finally, gray shoes. She completed the look with an array of punk-inspired accessories, including skull-printed, black fingerless gloves; a gray engineer hat; a silver cross necklace; a chain belt; and gray leg warmers - nodding to yet another throwback trend.
The "Everything I Wanted" singer has developed quite the reputation for her goth aesthetic, mixing in nostalgic trends along the way. She kicked off the year in a sustainable Renaissance-inspired ensemble by Balmain for Vogue's Climate Change cover and followed up with a vintage nude slip dress for her fragrance line. More recently, she posted a '90s grunge throwback look on Instagram, which consisted of a cropped angel graphic tee and low-rise jeans woven with a rainbow belt. Eilish famously sported the ultimate black naked dress by Simone Rocha over an Agent Provocateur corset while attending the 2023 Met Gala with brother Finneas and channeled a similar vibe in a sheer Rick Owens dress over yet another corset for her last red carpet appearance with Rutherford at the Vanity Fair Oscars party in March.
