It’s not all good in the hood. Even though Asos Marketplace features over 1,000 independently owned boutiques from all over the world, there’s one that caught the ire of social media: It’s a Hoodrat Thing.
The online clothing boutique caught the eye of savvy social media sleuths as early as December 16, but has been on Asos Marketplace since January. Before deleting their Facebook, the page posted about being chosen as one of the marketplace’s “One to Watch” brands.
“this is the biggest mess i've ever seen,” @_christinecath tweeted on Thursday, December 15, earning over 4,000 retweets and 5,000 likes. User JamillaDomani agreed. “I still can't believe (in all actuality I can) that Asos would endorse a brand called It's A Hoodrat Thing made by white women,” she tweeted on December 19.
Amid the backlash, Asos confirmed that the shop was no longer on the marketplace in a December 16 tweet. "Eeek! Really sorry about this! It's already been looked into and removed from our site," the brand wrote after responding to an angry tweeter. It’s a Hoodrat Thing also deleted its website, along with its Instagram and Twitter accounts, soon after the angry masses discovered them. Beforehand, the Kuta, Indonesia, label peddled itself as “Frankie and Nina, two hip-hop loving, wannabe gangsters who met whilst studying fashion in Manchester” according to its About Us page. The duo bonded over a love of vintage clothing and '90s r&b classics. Some of the goods offered were the “Nothin’ But a Gee Thang” cropped T-shirt, a mesh crop top inked with “Hoodrat” along the hem, a “Gangsters’ Paradise” denim jacket.
