American Music Awards 2015: The Red Carpet Was All About the Rear View

The American Music Awards were heavy on a few things: Towering topknots. Jennifer Lopez outfit changes. And lots and lots of skin. Some stars bared their legs via thigh-high slits (hi, Julianne Hough). Some stars took the plunge (we see you, Ashley Benson). But for these six stars, it was all about the sexy back.

From left, Ciara showed off her flawless figure in a sheer Reem Acra gown that had a tattoo-like effect, and had been in the works for months, she told reporters on the red carpet. “She made my sheer dream come true,” Ciara said of the designer. “It’s very comfortable. You would think by looking at my dress, but I feel good.”

Kendall Jenner complemented her over-the-topknot (and new bangs!) in a barely-there black dress with a thigh slit, open back and loose fringe straps. Super-strappy sandals and Neil Lane snake earrings completed the eye-popping look.

And Selena Gomez earned a “SO FRESH AND SO CLEAN” from Givenchy designer Riccardo Tisci when she wore his burgundy sequin shift with a daringly low back.

Demi Lovato, far left, selected a Lorena Sarbu gown that was demure from the front, thanks to the high neck and long sleeves, and bold from the back (perfect for the ’40s screen siren vibe she was going for — lots of dramatic over-the-shoulder glances required).

You could tell Carrie Underwood’s Elie Madi dress had a major back view thanks to the long sleeve capes, but it’s even fancier than that: it’s sheer and cutout, with covered buttons up the back, and it has a full train.

And finally, you might have been too fixated on Gigi Hadid’s bob to notice that her barely-there Bao Tranchi two-piece gown was totally backless, meaning that this might qualify for the pantheon of gowns that are more skin than fabric.
