Zanzibar might sound like a location out of a fantasy novel, but pictures of this very real African coastal hamlet inspired 10 Crosby Derek Lam's Spring 2014 collection. Lam took his cues from photographer Josef Hoflehner's book of black-and-white photography of the island, which meant a nearly monochromatic color palette of white, cream, black, and navy blue, with hints of yellow and a washed-out sky blue here and there.
The clothing itself was designed with intersections in mind - literally. Many pieces, from a black-and-white diagonally striped shirt to a strapless hemp-colored top worn with a tank top, appeared to crisscross over the model's chest. And with materials from cotton to jersey in this collection, this offering certainly felt breezy enough for the beach.
