It catapulted Billy Ray Cyrus into stardom and became a massive global hit, topping the pop and country charts and sparking a line dance craze.
And on Tuesday, the 55-year-old singer celebrated the 25th anniversary of his song “Achy Breaky Heart” with a performance on NBC’s Today show.
Chatting with Matt Lauer, Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb before the performance, Billy Ray said that the past 25 years have flown by.
“It seems like that,” he said, snapping his fingers. “Time flies. It really does. That’s why you got to enjoy every day, be the best you can be, be kind to people, represent light and love, and do everything you can do. Paint everything you can paint, sing everything you can sing, and just be a good person.”
To mark the tune’s milestone, Billy Ray has been releasing covers of “Achy Breaky Heart” — including a Spanish-English version and a electronic dance recording with Bootsy Collins.
He also reworked the song with original songwriter Don Von Tress and members of Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, the Swampers.
“It’s really fun,” Billy Ray said of recording the song’s remixes.

Watching Billy Ray’s interview and performance Tuesday morning from the sidelines was wife Tish Cyrus, 50, and daughters Brandi Cyrus, 29, and Noah Cyrus, 17.
Tish and Brandi were there to promote their new home-makeover show Cyrus vs. Cyrus: Design and Conquer — which premieres Thursday (at 10:15 p.m. ET) on Bravo. Noah was there prepping her own performance with her dad of her new song “I Am Stuck,” in Today’s 10:00 hour.
(Miley Cyrus missed the family reunion by one day. She’ll be on Today on Friday, performing her hit single “Malibu” — which was partly inspired by rekindling her romance with fiancé Liam Hemsworth).

Before taking the stage, Billy Ray reflected on his family’s big success.
“This is as exciting as anything I can remember,” he said. “Tish has been a manager, a friend, a mom to all these kids. And now to see her doing her own thing in something that she loves and is so good at. I’m really excited.”
As for Miley, Billy Ray said “I love to watch her entertain people.”
“She was born to do it. Noah’s the same way — they were both born to entertain and write songs,” he said. “Everybody’s just kind of hitting their stride.”
In addition to Brandi, Miley and Noah, Billy Ray and Tish are also parents to Metro Station frontman Trace Cyrus, 27, and model Braison, 23.
The 25th anniversary edition of “Achy Breaky Heart” and its remixes are out now.
