Stylist Micaela Erlanger Picks Her Favorite Looks of 2017 on Meryl Streep, Lupita Nyong'o and More

Superstar celebrity stylist Micaela Erlanger’s year can be summed up as a colorful one — and that’s not just because she’s become known for her love of choosing bold shades of the rainbow for her clients.

She kicked off the year in a big way when she dressed Meryl Streep for her awards show run, which garnered headlines not just for Streep’s elegant blue Elie Saab Oscars gown but also for the highly-publicized feud with Chanel before she wore it – and came out the other side stronger than before with a bigger list of stars on her styling roster than ever. They include longtime client Lupita Nyong’o, Tatiana Maslany, The Crown’s Vanessa Kirby, Ana de Armas and more. But perhaps her most impressive client add was style standout Diane Kruger, who has famously gone sans stylist for years, proving her expertise for creating standout red carpet looks attracts even the most red carpet-confident of stars.

Erlanger reflected on her jam-packed 2017, saying what she’s proudest of is continuing to expand her style horizons even as she’s become an establishment stylist. “I have really taken a lot of joy and interest in expanding the base of designers that I work with and especially emerging and newer younger talent,” Erlanger tells PeopleStyle. “That’s something that I’m excited about and its not something new or different for me. But it is something that I’ve had just even more fun with this year.”

And she has no plans to slow down: Meryl Streep is likely to do another award show run for her role in The Post, Lupita Nyong’o’s Star Wars tour has just begun and Vanessa Kirby’s The Crown just earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Series, Drama. That’s not all, either. The stylist hinted that she has a “few secret projects up my sleeve” for 2018, adding. “there are big things to come. I can’t wait for the new year.” Could it be a collaboration with a retailer? Her own line dropping? We can’t wait to find out.

In the meantime, we asked her to look back at some of her favorite looks of the year. Scroll down to see her top picks.

Diane Kruger in Halpern

“This was a really cool moment,” the stylist says of the sparkly two-tone design by Halpern’s Michael Halpern she put Kruger in for the New York premiere of In The Fade in December. “This was right after he had just won the British Fashion Award for British Emerging Talent in Womenswear. It was really nice to support someone starting a brand. It is really cool when you’ve discovered something new — and I actually found him while browsing on Instagram. His work just jumped out at me!”

Lupita Nyong’o in Halpern

“This was us ending the year on a high note for sure,” the stylist says of the glittering green Halpern design Nyong’o wore to the premiere of Star Wars: The Last Jedi in L.A. in December. “Sometimes you just have that feeling and you just know when something is going to work and have a moment and this was one of those feelings and one of those moments. I am inspired by Halpern and his designs and excited by it. Everything about this look was special. And it was the right dress on the right girl. It was especially spot-on because of the nature of the event — she brought the galaxy with her.”

Meryl Streep in Givenchy

“When she accepted the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the Golden Globes in January, it was such a powerful moment and to be a part of that was really exciting,” Erlanger says of the memorable acceptance speech Streep gave, speaking out against Donald Trump. “And she wore this gown that was so avant garde with cracked mirrors and all. It was fierce!”

Vanessa Kirby in Prada

“This Prada dress for the world premiere of The Crown in London in November was just amazing,” the stylist says. “It was this organza with a sheer sleeve with this bronze metallic sequin. It had just the right amount of edge and it was youthful and glamorous. It was just a cool-girl moment, so that was really special.”

Ana de Armas in Giambattista Valli Couture

While the stylist says the star’s entire tour for Blade Runner 2049 was a highlight of her year, she was particularly drawn to this “sensational” design worn to the Tokyo premiere in October. “It felt like the perfect gown for that location and premiere,” says Erlanger. “It had this beautiful high neck with a jeweled collar detail and this floral print on a heavenly chiffon. She just floated.”
