I Met Kendall and Kylie Jenner and I'm Not Sure If I Will Be Able to Top This Kareer Highlight

The title on my business card may read “Style News Editor,” but these days, I’m feeling like it might require “and Kardashian expert” added on. Thanks to the planet’s apparently insatiable appetite for all things KarJenner, I spend more than half of my time analyzing what they know and love, including kontouring trends, krop tops and Kim’s impressive-yet-puzzling sheer turtleneck collection.

After the hundreds of hours I have spent deKoding this tight-knit krew (not to mention all the time I spend trying to replace “c’s” with “k’s” which still gives me a weird form of satisfaction even though I should stop), I had the opportunity to interview Kendall and Kylie at their clothing collection launch in N.Y.C. Monday. And needless to say, I felt like the universe was giving me a sign (or maybe it was just the universe’s master, Kris Jenner, reaching out and saying “Thank You”). Everything had prepared me for this moment.

First crisis: What to ask. I was only allowed to ask three questions — not three each, but three in total. How would I get them to spill all their style secrets in three questions? How would I tell Kylie about my amazing experience with her makeup artist Hrush Achemyan? How would I turn my LuMee light on in time to get a selfie with them? These were the things I bounced off my colleagues, until eventually I came back to Earth, put on my big girl pants and just went for it.

The event was held at a private $43 million dollar private apartment in Tribeca (only the best for K + K) and the interviews happened on the palatial 5th floor (the DJ was on the 4th floor and so was the Kardashian-approved photo booth). I arrived prepped to settle into a couch and get quality face time with the sisters … but then I saw a press line of at least 20 reporters from various outlets, all impatiently waiting for the big arrival.

I was told to be there by 7:45, but Kendall and Kylie were fashionably late (45 minutes, to be exact). When the photographers huddled around the elevator, everyone knew what was about to happen. The door opened and … Kris Jenner was the first to walk out. She was glowing. In fact, I think she levitated six inches from the ground, practically gliding across the room as she greeted people.

Then Kendall and Kylie made their grand entrance. There was a collective gasp which took most of the air out of the room followed by the sound of the cameras snapping. Within seconds, the sisters were whisked to the press line.

Kendall looked runway-ready in a clingy knit gray dress from the collection and gladiator lace-up heels, plus a Lilly e Violetta lynx fur coat. (The dress was tiny, and she left her bra at home. It was a typical look for the model.) Kylie was surprisingly understated in a black sheer-paneled jumpsuit, her pout perfectly outlined thanks to her Lip Kit.

Before I knew it, they were approaching me. Admittedly, I might have blacked out for a second during the interview. I felt like I was watching myself from above. The whole thing happened so fast, but drumroll … they were cool. And normal. And they are, in fact, human. Below, a few things you need to know:

• Kendall and Kylie stress about outfits just as much as we do
It’s true. This is what they told me:

People: How long did it take you to decide what to wear tonight?
Kendall: It took me honestly two days. I had to figure out what I wanted to do. What shoes I wanted. I was stressing.
People: And Kylie, you got the jumpsuit!
Kylie: I changed about three times.
Kendall: I was about to wear the jumpsuit. [Editor’s Note: This was accompanied by a tug at the waistband of Kylie’s outfit.]

• They’ve tried on every piece in the collection before endorsing it
Kendall: When it’s done, you’re like “Wait, get me everything. I can’t wait to try it.”
Kylie: You have to see how your finished product turns out.

• Kanye made a cameo. To be specific, he smiled and time stood still
Yes, Yeezy showed up. And he was so happy and smiley and wearing some really questionable sweats.

• Kylie put her coat on halfway through the interviews
She was probably cold, but I feel this is important to note.

• There were gift bags
Inside? No, not a crop top. Diptyque’s popular “Baies” candle.

As I prepared to leave the Tribeca palace, fairly pleased with myself, I wondered what my hypothetical children would think of the enormous amount of Kardashian klippings that are piling up on my Internet résumé? I decided it might be time for a little Kardashian kleanse. Maybe I would take a week off and assign out some of those KarJenner posts that I usually saved for myself. Then there was a sign: Kendall was hurried past me to her waiting SUV and her fur coat grazed my arm on the way out. There was a spark. I knew I was right back where I started.
